Oil Analysis

Analysis of machinery and system oils for early detection of wear and contamination.

Oil sample bottles ranging from clean to heavily used, beside a sampling pump on an engine room workbench
STANDARDS
  • ISO 4406
  • IACS UR Z21

Overview

Analysis of an in-service oil sample shows the condition of oil and machinery through viscosity, water, TBN/TAN, wear metals and particle cleanliness (ISO 4406). Regular sampling catches wear and contamination before they become failures. Stern tube oil analysis is also the core data in class tailshaft condition monitoring schemes.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Viscosity, water, TBN/TAN, wear metals
  • Early warning from trend tracking
  • Supports stern tube condition monitoring
Engineer drawing a lube oil sample into a bottle from the sampling cock on a marine engine
Lab technician filling glass viscometers in a constant-temperature bath to measure oil viscosity

Scope of service

  1. 01Main and auxiliary engines
  2. 02Stern tube systems
  3. 03Reduction gears and gearboxes
  4. 04Hydraulic systems
